Day 25 - The Chenonceau Wines

To our delight the wonderful gardens and the chateau itself were not the only things you could experience at Château de Chenonceau. They also make wine and you are welcome to taste them in the wine cellar right there on the grounds. Naturally we did so, and of course we couldn't resist buying some bottles. We limited ourselves to 12, because it would be less handy getting them to our car if we had bought more, but they came in handy boxes with a handle so 12 were just perfect. Since we like collecting wine it really enhanced our visit and this "wine memory" certainly stands out a bit compared to the others, even though we only had very nice memories of visiting other vineyards to begin with. This was perhaps not as personal as meeting the actual wine makers, but what it lacked in that area it made up for with the flair of having such a beautiful chateau and gardens right outside, making the whole experience something special.

Day 12 - Altar, Organ, Spaciousness

I thought I was finished with the shots from Cathédrale Notre-Dame d'Amiens, but I was not. These last ones just had to be added into the challenge. The first, because I love how it shows just how grand the cathedral is inside- and I like how the architectural shapes repeat in foreground and background. To wander inside this fantastic building in the morning in complete silence really was something I'll never forget and this image really reminds me of what it felt like being there... the experience of being almost alone inside this wonder was extraordinary.

The second shot is for Bob, who remarked that the organ in a shot from a cathedral Rome in this post was outmaneuvered by another compositional element. I couldn't help but think about you as I shot this, Bob :). Maybe the window steals the show a bit in this one... but I like to think that it shows off the organ as well. We didn't hear it play when we were in the cathedral, but it sure looks beautiful, and it's very tasteful how the inner decor works together.

I hope you like this one Bob :)

The third is quite similar to the first shot I showed you of the inside, but it's taken from a bit further in and I like this shot's composition better (and you can see the altar better), though the other one shows off the the spaciousness of the cathedral well, just like the top shot of today. Either way, I like this one too much to leave it out, so it became a bonus shot. not that I'm sure which ones are bonus shots and which ones are the official ones... just like a proud mother I like them all ;)

Day 45 - Geometry in Photography

As I started shooting for more than plain old fun, as a newbie wannabe hobby photographer, I found it hard to use composition and perspective to improve my photos, but as the years have gone by, it has become something I can't shut off anymore. Using Geometry in photography is fun! This shot from a courtyard at Castel Sant'Angelo got me thinking about that.

Fist off, geometric shapes (circles, squares, rectangles etc.) are lovely things to incorporate into photography. It's something that draws you into a picture whether you're aware of it or not. As you can see, this shot has several shapes in it, and I think that's part of why I find it so attractive. And besides, as an old math nerd I always love it when photography and math come together.

Apart from the shapes, this shot is mathematical in another way as well - the classic rule of thirds can be applied to it too. I especially enjoy how the diagonal lines of the stone  railing connects two hotspots together and how the rectangle that is outside the bust's arch fits inside the middle lateral third. I hope you like it too :)

Day 39 - Solitude

As you enter Castel Sant'Angelo you'll pass by some wrought iron bars that section off small rooms. That is where I noticed this urn, all alone in a corner, with the light hitting it beautifully from the side. It's probably not special in any way - there was no explanation or plaque to tell me about it - but the scene was one of those that screamed "shoot me!". The light conditions - quite dark - had me wondering if I'd manage to pull it off, but the metal bars turned out to be excellent helpers. So I held my breath, steadied the lens on (and through) the bars and hoped for the best. I was happily surprised that it turned out to be free of motion blur and crystal sharp. It's weird, but this is one of my favorite shots from our trip... It's not of anything special or unique in any way, but that lighting... I really like its interplay with the urn and the wall behind it :)

CCC - August: Calm Afternoon

I was very happy to win the August competition. It's the first contest of the calendar series that I've won this year. That's always a great feeling, but this was even more special...

You see, I got a new camera for my birthday this year. I turned 30, and my family had all pitched in and bought me a brand new Nikon D7100 together. They're just the best (thank you, thank you, thank you!)! This win, is extra special because this is one of the very first photos I shot using my new toy, it's the first time I tried the HDR function that I had been longing for, and it's the first one taken with my new camera that I entered into a competition. That made the win all the more special to me. It was so great to be able to tell my family about the win when they asked me how I liked my new camera :)

Day 30 - Scottish National War Memorial

Tada! I've made it an other 30 days! Wohooo! That makes 61 days of blogging in total (I threw in an extra day between tow sets) phew! I have to say, I'm a bit relieved that it's coming to an end. But then there' no time to rest next month either. You see, next month is BotS month, so that ought to keep me busy haha. My, my! How am I ever going to make that one, already tired from these two months? We'll see I guess... But then, BotS is a different kind of challenge. I wouldn't bet on me though haha

Finally, I want to say that I'm so impressed by my fellow post-ed challenge participant Craig, and his gorgeous bike shots! I cannot believe how many of them he has! And he has been posting several shots a day, so we have had the pleasure of seeing not 30, but 54 of them! Wow! What an achievement! Congrats Craig, on making it so far with me, and thank you so much for tagging along. It's been a wonderful ride! Thank you for the company, all of your thoughtful comments and for sharing all of those beautiful shots :)

Day 29 - Castle Hill

This is the Castle of Edinburgh viewed from the rooftop of the National Museum of Scotland. It is a wonderful spot to shoot from, and a great place to rest after walking around looking at various artifacts for hour and hours... and hours!

As I've mentioned before, Mr loves history. He can walk around happily and look at old things all day without loosing interest. I'm a bit too impatient though, so I like to find a nice place, and sit comfortably with my own thoughts studying what ever elaborate, detailed or interesting looking piece I can find. Usually, I'd go shoot stuff, but even if you're allowed to shoot, and you are at that museum, the lighting is too weak to get decent pictures without a tripod, and who brings a tripod to a museum? I may be a bit crazy, but not that crazy haha. So, sitting around it was...

This rooftop proved to be a welcome oasis though, not only could I sit around, but the sunshine was wonderful, the view was stunning, and the light was photography friendly :)

Day 23 - City Life

I'm a bit late, sorry. I was just so exhausted after work yesterday... Mr and I just crashed on the sofa that evening. Add some good food, a bit of nice wine and a few hours of snooker (Shanghai Masters) and you'll have our evening. It was lovely! Just what we needed.

Anyway... I just found this shot and thought it would be fun to add it to the challenge, on account of the cyclist. I'm really enjoying Craig's series of action shots from the races. I can't believe how many gorgeous shots he has. Check it out his collection if you haven't already :)

Day 1 - Ser Barristan the Bold

I know this is the costume of a temple knight, but having read all of George R.R. Martin's famous books, and seen the Game of Thrones TV-series, I couldn't help but think of one of my favorite characters. He looks quite like him don't you think :).

As I wrote yesterday the goal of my challenge will be to edit the photos I took at a medieval market in France a week ago. I went there with only one lens. I chose the 18-105 mm one, since it's the most flexible and least intrusive of my lenses. I love doing candid shots and tried my very best to be discrete. I didn't quite manage with this guy though, who spotted me at the last moment. It still turned out great though.

I've done quite a lot of editing to this shot. It's not quite as zoomed in as you'd think - the DOF is faked - and I've cropped away quite a bit. Like I said, I was trying to be discrete and not zoom in on people. I figured I'd fake it in post-ed (selective blurring). Other than that I've done the usual basic stuff
(corrected the levels) and played around with the Nik Collection. I used Skylight, Bleach Bypass and Contrast Color Range. After that I sharpened the main subject and added a slight vignette.

I hope you like it

Day 4 - Portrait of a Gifted Teen

I love doing candid portraits whenever I can manage. With a big DSLR camera and an external flash it is hard to stay unnoticed haha. But occasionally someone is distracted or have drifter away in thought enough for me to catch them off guard.

I sometimes wish I could be invisible... the cloak in Harry Potter comes to mind. Man would I love one of those! Imagine what great candid portraits I would get! Especially of those loved ones who are uncomfortable in front of a camera...

Mr is one of those people. If I had a nickle for every "uncomfortable picture" I have of him I would have enough money to buy a brand new camera haha. It does not keep me from trying though. Sooner or later I manage to get him :)

07:52 - Task List

Yes, this is how I always arrange the windows on my work computer. I'm super pedantic when it comes to where things go. I actually cringe when somebody comes over and alters the size of my different windows! The reason is that I usually use a lot of different stuff during a workday, and if it's not arranged in this particular way, it just doesn't work for me.

Okay, I use... three different browsers, and two, no three different text formatting programs and one text reading program. I also like to have at least three different folders open at any time, and my mailbox (not counting the web-based one). And I have to have things arranged so that I can access the most important shortcuts on my desk at any given time. Oh, and did I mention that I have two monitors? I'm really not crazy, it's just that my job is crazy sometimes and organizing really helps. Don't get me wrong though, I absolutely love it all :D.

New Beginnings

It's a brand new year, filled with new possibilities, surprises and adventures! Time to move forward and start fresh. And, with that in mind, what could be more fitting than a new favorite online hangout spot?

As some may know, the well known site Worth1000 has changed owners and is in the process of moving. Nobody likes change, but I have kept an open mind throughout the process and have been willing to give the new place a chance. As it turned out, the new place offered is not even a shadow of the awesomeness that is W1K. Thus, for many reasons, of I which won't ramble on about here, I have chosen not to stay on...

Instead I chose a fresh new home. And what could be better than a place developed by one of our own? A well known "Worthian" who knows what the site is about and has been a contributing member of the community for a long time. Color me impressed when I heard the news that a new home was in the making, and my jaw dropped even further when I saw what this one person had accomplished in only one month! It's so much more than that other place, and I just know it's going to be grand when it's finished!

My new home is being created by a generous person, who has put in hours and hours in it's making. It is called Dagger Bay and it's growing, fast! Just one week ago we were only a handful of members, and now there's 119 of us. Now if that's not impressive I don't know what is! It's a true testimony to just how awesome this place already is. When most of a community's most active members move to the same place, you know it's good. And that is just what has happened here. Wow!

Dagger Bay is currently just a forum, but things are happening fast and soon we will be able to host all sorts of contests - effects, photo, illustration, writing, multimedia and strips (BotS)! We're aiming at adding more familiar features as time passes and, in time, I think it has the potential to become even better than what we had. The drive and passion of creation drives us forward and I just love the joy of it all. Dagger Bay has found its way into my heart faster than I could ever have imagined.

I hope my shameless promotion of Dagger Bay hasn't scared you away haha. I just really really want to get my feeling across. Please come join us! If you know us, let me tell you that we're still that merry old bunch you're so familiar with, and if you don't, then I'll tell you that you couldn't find a better community out there, com join us and find out what a fun gang we are :D

Day 23 - Travel

A car is a good thing to have. It gives you a lot of freedom and it's hard to manage without it. We used to manage quite well before, that is before we bought the house, but now it's getting harder and harder...

Mr and I are currently waiting for our car to get assembled, and we look forward to it like children before Christmas. Hopefully, it will be ours before then too! It's our first car and we're both very excited about it. We've already named it too. We like to name our stuff haha. It started with our auto-mower, which is called Dandelion, and our car will be named Roach. Ten points to you if you can figure out how we chose those names ;).

Do any of you name your stuff too?

Day 20 - Library

This is part of our little library at home. We actually have one, though it's also our guest room with a hide-a-bed :). Anyway, Mr and I have organized it to our taste with genres and series in mind. Though I don't actually know how these three ended up together. Maybe they're all religion to Mr haha.

Me? I'm a fantasy girl. It started with "Lord of the Rings" way, way back, and I've never stopped since. My favorites? Andrzej Sapowski and George R.R. Martin. They have both managed that great feat of bringing a whole new world to life, with all its nuances and complexity. I love that it's not ever "happily ever after" with them, but rather "anything goes". Never before had I encountered fantasy with a higher sense of reality than many other "finer" works of literature. I've read far too much of that, let me tell you, and I never liked it...

A few year back, I studied "English Literature" at the university, or so it was called, even though the works originated from many different countries. We had to read a lot of "fine" works then. Works like "Disgrace", "Pride and Prejudice" and "Beloved"... I hated them all with a roaring passion! Just as I hate the very concept of "finer" literature. Why should one kind of literature be considered "better" than the other? Just because a it's a different genre? It does not automatically make it more enjoyable to read, and that's what counts. I say "to each his own". Read what you like and to disregard the critics. Everything is subjective anyway :)

What do you enjoy reading?

(And if you enjoy "Pride and Prejudice", that's fine too ;) )

Day 11 - Color

This most be the most elaborate setup I've ever done! And the strangest one too, but hey, whatever works!

This is a bundle of straws. I put them on a mortar, that stood on a chair, that stood on our kitchen table (this is not usually the case though haha, if you're wondering :P). The kitchen lamp behind my setup caused lens flare, so I used a tripod and remote. I also held up a kitchen towel behind the straws, and let the light shine through it instead of directly at the straws. Though that turned out too dark, so, I decided to put an empty jar behind the straws, a jar to support my phone. The phone was set to use its own little flashlight (you know, that itty bitty one that it uses as a flash) to shine through the straws.

So there you have it, this is how I spent my afternoon haha!

Day 7 - Measure

It's not easy shooting stuff like this all alone! There are lots of things to coordinate at once - the rate of sugar poring down, the position of the scoop, the camera angle and the focus.

I had a little whoopsie today as I pored the sugar with my left hand while trying to compose with my right. I have to admit, the mess it made had me a bit annoyed at the time, but, as soon as I saw the result, I realized it was the best shot of the session! Isn't it wonderful how things turn out sometimes? I just love how playful it looks - as if a child was poring, helping its mother with the baking. Let it be our little secret that it was really just a clumsy 20+ Mrs, with an itchy trigger finger ;)

Day 1 - Grass

So! November has finally arrived! This month I will be following a list of words as my theme. The list was created using a random word generator and I think it makes things more interesting and challenging than simply shooting random stuff on a broader theme. So, the first word of the month is "Grass".

I had thought of doing a shot like this today, but unfortunately, nature didn't provide - it was both dry and cloudy. However, nothing can stop a trigger happy girl with an itchy index finger, and thus I thought - "If you can't make it, fake it". And so, my neighbors ought to have been a bit surprised by seeing me today, with a spray-bottle in my hand and my backside in the air as I was crawling around right in the middle of my lawn haha. I hope you like it :)

Planting Peonys and Killing Monsters

This month has been... unusual. On one hand, I've been very busy at work, and we've done a lot of rearranging in the garden lately. Today for instance, I've been hunched over all afternoon pulling out weeds while Mr moved two bushes and replanted some flowers. On the other hand however, this month has been incredibly lazy and hedonistic too, as both Mr and I delved into "the Witcher 3", gaming for hours and hours, enjoying all the little details of the world we both are so fascinated by. Boy am I lucky, I married a man who is just as nerdy as me!

So, about the game, for those of you who might be wondering, it's the best one I've ever played! One play-through easily takes 100 hours and though it may be filled with side quests, they are never boring, which is a mark of a good game. Compared to "Skyrim" for instance, which is an other open world game, the side quests are more motivating, more diverse, much more unpredictable and they play a more central role to the main protagonist Geralt. I'ts not just "run from point A, to point B, kill monster C, get D and return to get a reward", it's never that mundane. There is a real sense of motivation, of exploration and of building your character, not only in terms of getting more XP, but of actually getting to know who Geralt is. And the best part is that there are plenty of these little nuggets of gold in the game - even though I made it a point to explore the world thoroughly during the last play-through (I'm on the second one now), I still find new quests this time. Let me tell you, the game is HUGE!

An other thing that's really great is that, not unlike the series "Game of Thrones", the game is not about black and white, good and evil or any kinds of moral extremes. I love the fact that every choice has you debating and thinking things over. Very much unlike other games when there's really only one way I can possibly play, because, lest face it, I'm not a bad guy and I could never deal with the choices required. Nope, the game is filled with moral dilemmas, and I love it!

When it comes to the world itself, it's alive, really alive! It feels lives in, in a way I've never experienced in any other games. The people around you are like anyone you'll find in real life, there are greedy merchants, trying to suck up to you, there are bullies, who are just as annoying as real ones, there are smelly drunks and pious priests, intellectuals, scheming spies, poor orphans, gossiping women, cross-dressers, hard-working farmers, dimwits, maniacs, beggars, psychopaths, worried mothers, men's men, thieves, dandies, yellow-bellies, sad saps, know-it-alls and any other person you can possibly think of. And thy're all unique, with their own dialogue and appearance, each and every one of them believable. That is nothing short of amazing.

Finally, I have to say, that as a huge fan of Andrzej Sapkowski, who wrote the books the game is based on, as well as the previous games, I had pretty high expectations on the game. The previous two games were detailed in terms of lore, the voice acting of "the Witcher 2" was absolutely superb, the characters were detailed, the quest-line was very true to the books and the graphics was stunning. I wanted "the Witcher 3" to be like "Skyrim", but more detailed and alive, I wanted it to be like "The Witcher 2", but even more diverse and challenging, I wanted it to be like "Final Fantacy IX", but with an even more epic story and I wanted it to be like "Dragon Age 3", but with more detailed characters and more "soul". So, needless to say, I wanted the third game to be exceptional! I have to admit that I was a bit worried prior to the release - how could it possibly live up to all that? Well... the answer is, without a moment's doubt, YES! "The Witcher 3" is above and beyond! Wow! Just WOW!

The Nerd Awakens

So, I haven't been around for a while, sorry, but that's the way it goes when the nerd in me awakens (and gets insomnia). You see, I'm one of those super duper nerds who is not only into Fantasy and SciFi, but also an intense gamer. and now that "The Witcher 3" is out, I've been glued to my computer for hours and hours, playing the game, turning over every stone, exploring every cave and seeking out every quest I can possibly find.

I could go into depth and write an entire essay on the game, but suffice to say that I'm so nerdy that I've not only played the previous games more times than I'd care to admit, but I have also read all the novels and short stories about the game's protagonist. So, you get the picture, big fan of it all and I absolutely LOVE the last part of the trilogy!

So, sorry for not updating haha, I'll probably be back more frequently in a month or so, when I've played through it all (let me tell you, the game is HUGE!!!).

Cheers!
