Day 4 - Bells and Clock Faces

We're still in Martinikerk. There are things to see inside you see. Like the bells, a short history video about the city and the church and a bell organ (is that the right word? It's the one that came to mind at). It was a nice surprise.

You're getting a bonus shot today. I think you can guess who this is, but for those that are not so familiar this is Mr, the apple of my eye and the inspiration for one of my BotS series' main characters. He's not as crazy in real life, though he sure likes to goof around. He doesn't like having his picture taken though, so getting to shoot him is rare. I'm working on getting him comfortable in front of the camera, but I can't really say anything because I'm the same way. I like being the one behind the camera :)

On a different note, I never stop being surprised of just how much difference the raw format makes. It's so cool how it can save pictures like the bottom one. It totally helps not having to worry about exposure as much as I used to.

  1. That church might want to hire you to polish up their bells - nice restoration (ha). ;-) You might want to put a lightsaber in Mr's hand (that's what brightened up the place, right (groan)? :-)

    1. Thanks. A lightsaber, haha! Definitely! But then I might have to clone away his eyebrows :'D

  2. Nice transformations. I only shoot in RAW, and I can tell you I have had and will have to rescue some quick unanticipated shots from my trip!

    1. I make my camera make one jpeg and one raw file for each of my shots. I don't like throwing things away and that way I can keep the jpegs of the shots I don't decide to edit and throw the raw files away to save space on my hard drive :)

    1. I do too. A hotel we stayed at on this very road-trip had a thai theme and had a gorgeous little bell on the mantle. I am going to have an eye out for one of those the next time I go to Asia :)

  4. You did a great job of bringing him out of the shadows!

  5. That "bell organ" is a carillon. Many cities have a carillon in the main clocktower with a specialist playing it. Some every hour, some only a few time on special occasions and anything in between.
I like your diagonals in today's shot.

    1. That's interesting, I've never seen anything like it before. Someone sat down by it and played a short fragment of a song when we were there, but I don't think that person was a specialist. I wish we had had the good fortune to hear a specialist play :)

  6. What a fabulous old bell! I've heard that each bell has it's own distinct sound. I'm surprised at the difference in the two images of your husband, how the original one is so dark yet the processed one is just right. One day I'll have to take the time to play with RAW.

    1. Yes, they do have their own sounds :), we heard them while we were there, beautiful.

RAW really does wonders to help you sort out difficult "contrasty" environments such as this. I thought it a bit daunting before I tried my hand at it, but it's really not that different to work with, the only thing is that I now use two different programs to edit my photos, otherwise it's pretty much the same. It takes a bit longer to do that of course, but it's totally worth it :)
