Day 6 - "Time and Tradition"

As we moved into our current home we also came into possession of this grandfather clock. The clock didn't come with the house, but rather with Mr - since we bought the house from his mother. This clock has always been his; it got delivered about the same time he was born, and it has always been very dear to him.

I love furniture like this that has a story behind it. We actually keep his "birth card" by the clock-face - it seemed to belong there. The clock does not work all that well - if you wind it, it only ticks for an hour or two before it stops. We've set it to 10:53 AM. The reason? That's the time when Mr was born :)

Addendum:
I've just tested the suggestion Marga had. I think it looks great, don't you? :) Thank you for your feedback!

  1. This is really attractive. It could be framed as a piece of modern art. Love the colours together..

  2. As a photo representing that clock it's very lovely, you can see just enough to recognize the subject.
    For a feeling of abstract, for me personally, there is to much going on, especially in the top right. When I virtually crop out the top and have just the chains and part of the weight in sight I feel it's more balanced.

    1. Thank you! I tried it and it looks great! Unfortunately the chains don't look as sharp though (due to DOF), I'll try shooting a new one after lunch and see what I can do :)

  3. A beautiful image with great colours and the beautiful gold shiny bits. I also agree that cropping out the distracting bit at top right might make it more balanced, but I am not totally opposed to it either. Very well seen!

    1. Thank you Kim. I like both versions, but in different ways. The second version is certainly cleaner and has better balance, but there is something in the way the first one captured the light that appeals to me. Hard to choose :)

  4. No.2 is also very appealing but I like the total irregularity of No.1. That's what made me think of modern art.

    1. Thank you Thelma. I have a hard time deciding which one I like the best. There is something about the lighting in the first one that I really like - it has a nice natural vignette ans yet sparkles. The second one is more of a pure abstract and I really like the composition. Very hard indeed. I like them both :)

  5. Probably just needs a a good (inside) cleaning. Both are cool shots!

  6. Ooooh! - Shiny! I looove shiny things :-)
    Great shot, I personally prefer the original as I find it a little more balanced. What a great looking clock also, I'm a sucker for grandfather clocks and also own one which was made by my father years ago, alas it's not as shiny as yours but still goes well. I've also used it for an abstract before here:

    1. I remember that shot, it's gorgeous :). I love "old" furniture like that, it has so many little details that modern furniture usually lacks. How great to have your fathers handmade clock, what a treasure! My dad also built furniture, but sadly none made it to Sweden.

  10. omg, when I was a small child there was this song about a grandfather clock and I must write it here as you say it was bought when your hubby was born.:

    My grandfather's clock was too large for the shelf,
    So it stood ninety years on the floor;
    It was taller by half than the old man himself,
    Though it weighed not a pennyweight more.
    It was bought on the morn of the day that he was born,
    And was always his treasure and pride;
    But it stopp'd short — never to go again —
    When the old man died.

    Nice photo and I agree your second crop is better. Eury

    1. I've shown the song to Mr, how cool! Thank you for telling me, I wish I knew the melody too so I could teach it to our future children, maybe I can find it somewhere on google :)
